TYRE REGROOVING

Regrooving is a specialist process in which grooves in a tyre are re-cut, using a hand-held tool, to a deeper level to restore up to 4mm of tread depth – that can be as much as 25% of the original tread depth.
Regrooving is an underutilised practice that unlocks additional service life from MICHELIN new tyres, and can provide up to 30% extra mileage. The tyre does not need to be demounted to be regrooved, and this portion of the tyres “life” has the lowest cost per kilometer, by a large margin.
The end result of regrooving is affected by the quality of the new tyre and the skill of the regrooving technician.

Not all tyres are designed to be regrooved. When a tyre is designed, MICHELIN prescribes an under tread that is thick enough to allow high quality regrooving without affecting the strength of the product. To help identify if a tyre can be regrooved, it will have REGROOVABLE moulded on the sidewall. MICHELIN tyres have regrooving depth indicators which are a guide for the technician who performs the regroove.

Regrooving a new tyre offers both performance and cost benefits. Regrooving can enhance tyre performance including the ability to evacuate water away from under the tyre. Regrooving can also restore some of the lateral grooves that are worn away towards the end of the tyre life. This provides new biting edges and assists with grip.

  • More mileage: When regrooving is carried out at a time when the original tread depth has 3 to 4mm remaining, regrooving will restore the tread depth, providing up to 25% greater tyre life.
  • More safety through grip regeneration: Regrooving significantly renews the grip of the tyre through the regeneration of the groove.
  • Less fuel consumption and less CO2 emissions:Regrooving is carried out in the phase when the tyre has the lowest rolling resistance due to higher rigidity of the tread pattern, and low rolling resistance means increased fuel efficiency.
  • Less raw materials consumed: By adding only 5% additional rubber volume when the tyre is new, a MICHELIN Regroovable tyre will add up to 25% more kilometres which creates a 16% reduction in raw materials when compared to non-regroovable tyres.
  • Due to having a low cost compared to performance gained, regrooving can lower operators’ running costs dramatically. This results in fewer new tyres being purchased over the course of a single year as the life of each new tyre is extended.
  • An evenly worn and clean tyre surface free from any cuts and damages that has between 3-4 mm of tread remaining is ideal.
  • Regrooving is not recommended if the tread shows major damage such as multiple holes and cuts, or places where the tread has been torn off. If the metal layers of the crown can be seen through damage or cuts the tyre should not be regrooved.
  • The best time to regroove is when the original tread is worn to 4mm remaining depth. This ensures best value in terms of extra mileage. A new tyre with 4mm of tread remaining can be turned in to a regrooved tyre that has 8mm of tread remaining.
  • Regrooving is carried out in the phase when the tyre has the lowest rolling resistance due to higher rigidity of the shallow tread remaining. Because the remaining tread depth is low this also means that rolling resistance is low which results in increased fuel efficiency.
  • Regrooved tyres are only suitable for highway/on road and urban applications. In long distance, highway applications Michelin Regrooved tyres can still be used in all positions. It’s usually recommended that on road urban and regional operators use regrooved tyres on their drive or trailer axles however further advice on this can be discussed with your Advantage Tyres technician. Off road applications (logging or stock) are not recommended for regrooving as in these applications tyres are removed earlier to protect the cases for retreading.
